01

Know what can actually break

Inventory custom plugins, template overrides, checkout customizations, payment/shipping integrations, scheduled jobs and server dependencies. An update risk assessment without this map is guesswork.

02

Use staging with representative data

A staging site with an empty catalog does not validate a production store. Test critical flows with realistic products, taxes, roles, shipping methods and integrations—while preventing accidental external side effects.

03

Define a smoke test before changing anything

Write the minimum set of checks that must pass: browse product, add to cart, calculate shipping, pay in a sandbox/test method, create order, run key background jobs and verify integrations.

04

Rollback is a decision, not a backup file

Know what triggers rollback and what needs reverting: code, database migrations, configuration or external state. Some changes are not safely reversible by restoring files alone.

Engineering checklist
  • Maintain a technical dependency map
  • Back up and test restore
  • Update on staging first
  • Run a fixed smoke-test checklist
  • Monitor after deployment
  • Document rollback criteria
